One with Nature: Accommodations and Private Rooms in Slovenia’s Mountain Huts
Deep in the heart of Slovenia’s alpine landscapes, where rugged peaks meet rolling green valleys, mountain huts provide a haven for hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts. These huts, known as “planinske koče”, are more than just simple shelters—they offer a unique way to experience the raw beauty of the mountains while enjoying the comforts of accommodation. Whether resting in a dormitory or a private room, staying in a Slovenian mountain hut means truly becoming one with nature.

A Cozy Retreat in the Wilderness
Slovenia’s mountain huts are designed to blend seamlessly into their surroundings, providing warmth and comfort amid the untamed beauty of the Alps. Many huts sit at high elevations, perched along scenic trails, offering breathtaking views of peaks like Vršič, Mangart, Prisojnik, Slemenova Špica and Špik. Others are nestled in forested valleys, surrounded by pristine lakes and meadows.
Hikers arriving at these huts are greeted with a warm, rustic atmosphere—wooden interiors, traditional alpine decor, and the inviting scent of homemade Slovenian cuisine. Many huts provide basic amenities such as hot showers, clean toilets, and comfortable bedding, ensuring a comfortable stay. Meals often feature hearty local dishes such as jota (bean and sauerkraut soup), ričet (barley stew), and štruklji (rolled dumplings with various fillings), perfect for replenishing energy after a long trek.
Private Rooms: A Serene Escape
While many mountain huts provide shared dormitories, an increasing number now offer private rooms, catering to those who seek solitude and comfort. These rooms, often with wooden bunk beds or simple twin beds, allow hikers to unwind peacefully after a challenging day on the trails. Booking these private rooms in advance, especially during peak hiking seasons, is advisable to ensure availability.
For couples or families, private rooms offer a more intimate experience—a chance to wake up to the sunrise over the mountains, listen to the sounds of nature undisturbed, and fully embrace the tranquil alpine setting. Some huts, like Erjavčeva koča near Vršič Pass, provide private accommodations with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks, making the stay truly memorable.

One with Nature: A Unique Experience
Staying in a mountain hut isn’t just about having a place to sleep—it’s about connecting with nature on a deeper level. Unlike traditional hotels, mountain huts operate in harmony with their environment. Many rely on solar power, rainwater collection, and eco-friendly waste management, ensuring minimal impact on the pristine surroundings.
At night, with no city lights to interfere, the sky comes alive with thousands of stars, making stargazing an unforgettable experience. In the early morning, as the sun rises over the Julian Alps, the landscape transforms into a golden masterpiece, and the fresh mountain air fills your lungs with a sense of renewal.
An Unforgettable Alpine Adventure
Whether seeking an adventurous hike or a peaceful retreat, staying in a Slovenian mountain hut is an experience like no other. The cost of staying in a mountain hut is generally affordable, making it an accessible option for all types of travellers. The combination of cosy accommodations, the beauty of the wilderness, and the warm hospitality of the hut caretakers make for a truly immersive escape. With private rooms available, travellers can enjoy both solitude and the camaraderie of fellow hikers, creating memories that last a lifetime.
For those looking to disconnect from the modern world and reconnect with nature, a night in a mountain hut is the perfect way to experience Slovenia’s stunning alpine landscapes—one step closer to the mountains and one with nature.

Driven to nature
In Slovenia, genuine contact with nature awaits everywhere. When you set up or choose your temporary holiday home in a campsite, when you opt for different accommodation in a glamping site and even when you stop your motor home right on the doorstep of a city, you really feel Slovenia’s nature. With its changing seasons, its rhythms of day and night and its influence on Slovenian culture, you have 365 days a year to enjoy an unforgettable break.
Four worlds of diversity
Slovenia is the junction of the Alps and the Mediterranean, the Karst and the Pannonian Plain. With a tent or a caravan, a motorhome or just your personal luggage to accommodate you in pre-built mobile homes or in surprisingly different glamping accommodation, you can stop off in any of these different environments. In Alpine Slovenia you can gaze at the peaks of mighty mountains, in Mediterranean and Karst Slovenia the wind from the sea caresses you, in thermal Pannonian Slovenia you are close to the springs of healing waters and in Ljubljana and Central Slovenia you are close to UNESCO World Heritage sites. Since everything in Slovenia is close by, you can get to know all the diversity of Slovenia with day trips from your chosen starting point.
Responsible towards nature
Slovenia, which ranks among the world’s most sustainable destinations, is a model for the development of green tourism. More than half of the country is covered by areas of special importance or areas where nature protection applies. Slovenian accommodation prides itself on its sustainable practices and on responsible guests who help preserve the great outdoors through their behaviour. In Slovenia, both operators and visitors respect the rules of the sites.
Here, everything is close by
In the only European country linking the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Karst and the Pannonian Plain, everything is accessible within a relatively short drive. From the capital and central Slovenia you’ll be in the remotest corners of Slovenia in just under two hours!
Safely in the summer and in winter
In Slovenia, among the traffic regulations you should note the obligatory use of dipped (low-beam) headlights even during daytime driving. Use of fog lights is permitted only where visibility is reduced to less than 50 metres. The driver and all passengers in the vehicle must wear seat belts. A safety triangle, a spare set of light bulbs, a first aid kit and a reflective vest are compulsory equipment in cars. Winter equipment is compulsory from 15 November to 15 March. Winter tyres should have at least a 3-millimetre profile. If you have summer tyres, make sure you have snow chains in the car. Drive safe. Do not drink alcoholic beverages when driving!
Alpine Slovenia
Among the tallest mountains and the wildest waters
Slovenia’s highest regions are surprisingly rich in nature and biodiversity. They are particularly preserved in Triglav National Park, the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve, the UNESCO Karavanke Geopark and other protected areas. Here you can camp in close proximity to outstanding natural attractions and at the same time near interesting towns with a distinctive cultural vibe.
The area attracts lovers of hiking, cycling, fishing and fly- fishing, quiet and adrenaline-filled experiences on crystal- clear rivers and lakes, and skiing and other winter sports. The Julian Alps, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, the Karavanke Mountains and the Pohorje Mountains offer attractive mountain and sport centres as well as popular international competition venues.
