Lepena is a dispersed settlement – a village – in the valley of the Lepenjica stream, a tributary of the Soča River. The Lepena valley is nearly 7 km long and is divided into an upper and a lower part. They are separated by a valley threshold, which remains from the retreating glacier. During the Pleistocene, a slope glacier that fed the enormous Soča Glacier flowed through the valley.

The village, situated between 444 and 700 meters, consists of parts: Klin, Na logu in Lepena, V koncu, and Zaotoki. They are connected by a road that branches off from the Bovec-Trenta road at Kufenk. It was built during World War I. The Italians also built an extension over Duplje under Bogatin, which has since deteriorated and today serves as a mountain path past the home at the Krn Lakes to Komna.

Lepenjica has a strong karst spring with a waterfall under the wall of Mali Lemež. Already below the threshold, it is joined by the Šunik stream, which has a waterfall and a series of cascades. Along it, there are remains of a mill and sawmill, and the mountain path Šunikov vodni gaj is also arranged.

At the confluence of Lepenjica into the Soča, there is a large gravel bed where coltsfoot grows extensively, locally called lepenje, hence the name of the stream and valley.

In Lower Lepena, hornbeam, birch, walnut, hazel, poplar, and willow grow. At the end of Lepena and under the Zagreben plateau, there is a continuous beech forest, while on Črni vrh and at the bottom of Upper Lepena, there is a spruce forest.

Lepena is not just a destination; it’s an experience. It’s a place where nature’s tranquillity meets adventure, where every trail, river, and mountain peak tells a story. Whether you’re seeking the thrill of outdoor sports, the peace of a riverside stroll, or the challenge of a mountain hike, Lepena welcomes you with open arms, promising an unforgettable escape into the heart of Slovenia’s natural beauty.
