Erjavčeva mountain hut 1955 postcard

We have received a postcard from Erjavčeva mountain hut from the year 1955. Even then, it was hidden behind famous larch trees, but it was smaller than it is today. In the background, you can also see the “doghouse” and the electrical tower that supplies us with electricity from Kranjska Gora. On the hut’s roof, the two windows that now illuminate rooms number three and four are not yet visible, as they are today.

If you also have an old photograph of Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič in your archives, we would appreciate it.

Collecting historical materials such as old pictures, photographs, postcards, and other items from Erjavčeva Koča mountain hut is a commendable project that aims to preserve and celebrate the rich history of this iconic location in the Slovenian Alps. Such a collection can provide invaluable insights into the cultural, social, and architectural evolution of Erjavčeva Koča and its role in developing mountain tourism and alpinism in Slovenia.

To successfully compile a comprehensive archive, consider the following steps:

  1. Public Call for Contributions: Reach out to the community through social media, local newspapers, and websites dedicated to hiking, mountaineering, and history. Encourage individuals to share their personal collections, stories, and memories related to Erjavčeva Koča.
  2. Collaboration with Local Institutions: Contact local historical societies, museums, and archives that might hold relevant materials. Libraries and tourist offices in Kranjska Gora and surrounding areas could also be valuable resources.
  3. Digitalization and Preservation: Digitize all collected materials to ensure their preservation and make them accessible to a wider audience. This could involve scanning photographs and postcards, transcribing written materials, and archiving digital photos.
  4. Online Archive or Exhibit: Create an online platform to showcase the collection. This could be a dedicated website or a digital exhibition within an existing site related to Slovenian heritage, mountaineering, or the Julian Alps.
  5. Physical Exhibition: Organize a physical exhibition in collaboration with local cultural centers or museums. This would not only celebrate the history of Erjavčeva Koča but also engage the local community and tourists.

By undertaking this project, you contribute to the preservation of local heritage and enhance the appreciation of the cultural and natural history surrounding Erjavčeva Koča. It’s a way to honour the past generations of hikers, climbers, and caretakers who have been part of the hut’s story, ensuring their experiences and contributions are remembered and celebrated by future generations.
